Our Deepest Belonging

Our Deepest Belonging is a five-year storytelling initiative based at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis. We tell authentic stories from communities too often pushed to the margins — and show that inclusive, vibrant faith communities are already thriving.

About the Project

Our Deepest Belonging is a storytelling initiative based at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis, funded by Lilly Endowment. It begins with a conviction: inclusive, vibrant faith communities are already thriving — and our stories deserve to be told.

Over the next five years, four co-located communities are telling those stories together: through podcasts, documentary film, visual art, and live events. Our communities are first and second generation immigrants, people with disabilities, those on the economic margins, and spiritually curious folks asking big questions about faith. We share a belief that our stories are what make us human– and that telling them, together, is an act of belonging itself.

Our Deepest Belonging is made up of four communities who share one building:

Minnesota Swahili Christian Congregation

A congregation gathered in faith, Swahili language, and shared experience.

Metro Work Center

A supported employment community for adults with disabilities.

Soup for You! Café

A community café that has built connections over soup for over a decade.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

Lead partner, rooted in the Longfellow neighborhood for over a century.

Nicolas Jaramillo
Storytelling Partner - Video

Nicolas Jaramillo

Nicolas Jaramillo is a filmmaker and the founder of Nigoja Productions, a Minneapolis video production company working with churches, nonprofits, and community-centered organizations. Born and raised in Colombia, he immigrated to the United States in 2016 — an experience that shapes how he works and the stories he chooses to tell.

As a first-generation immigrant, telling the story of a neighborhood organizing around immigration justice isn’t abstract work for him. It’s personal.

He has served as Holy Trinity’s storytelling partner throughout Our Deepest Belonging, directing and producing the films at its center.

From creating childhood videos at skate parks, to Emmy-nominated documentary shorts, Seth finds joy in helping others to find their voice, and is honored to help document the work of Our Deepest Belonging.
