 Faithful Energy Campaign Overview

FIRST – We started by signing up both our church building and 120 of our member households to receive their electricity through wind power through Windsource.

  • You can sign up any time for Wind Source – (see info below.)

SECOND – We are signing up our congregation’s building to participate in a community solar garden, to double our carbon reduction while saving money. We are inviting our member households to also consider subscribing to purchase their electricity from our Community Solar Garden.

  • Through our Windsource subscription, Holy Trinity’s building is purchasing renewable energy credits so that Xcel energy will add more wind turbines to go above and beyond their current renewable energy requirements. Our church building paying about $1,000 a year extra to Xcel for our renewable, wind-based electricity. Our members pay about $5 extra per month for Windsource.
  • Through our Community Solar Garden subscription, Holy Trinity’s building’s electricity bill will be offset through monthly bill credits, so we will save $2,000 per year, easily covering the cost of our Windsource subscription. By subscribing to a community solar garden we are helping Xcel Energy reach it’s 1.5% solar electricity mandate more quickly. Participating households will save about $200 a year on their electricity bill through their community solar garden subscription.

 “Community Solar” is coming to Holy Trinity and you!

Holy Trinity’s Faithful Energy Leadership Team has arranged for our church building to offset our electricity bill through bill credits from a from a community solar garden. Now you can do the same!  Through Windsource and community solar 100% of Holy Trinity’s electricity will be carbon-neutral from renewable energy sources.

By negotiating with Minnesota Community Solar, a community-minded Longfellow Neighborhood company, our church has reserved electricity to be generated by a “garden” of solar panels to be built next spring in the metro area.

Now we can make essentially the same opportunity available to Holy Trinity members.  Whether you are a homeowner or a renter in a house or apartment, a limited number of Holy Trinity members can subscribe to the same community garden that the church will use.  By doing so, not only will you join in leading the fight to combat climate change, but you will save 9% on your monthly electricity bill!

Over 120 Holy Trinity households signed up last spring for WindSource. Fortunately, the community solar program can complement what you are already doing through WindSource to double your carbon reduction.  We will explain how Windsource and community solar garden subscriptions are complementary at our workshops below.

On Sunday, October 18, Holy Trinity’s worship services we celebrated our move into renewable energy resources, with a special focus on community solar.  In the weeks following that Sunday, two workshops will be offered in partnership with MN Community Solar to help people understand exactly how to reserve a contract for solar energy, and how to relate solar energy to WindSource.

Plan to attend one of these workshops to learn more:

  • Tuesday, October 27 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM (with refreshments) in Holy Trinity’s Library;
  • Sunday November 1, 10am Adult forum in Holy Trinity’s Library;
  • Sunday, November 8 at Noon (with lunch) in Holy Trinity’s Library.
  • Thursday, December 3 6:30 to 8pm (with appetizers) at Gandhi Mahal, Community Room 3009 27th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55406

Our goal is to have 50 Holy Trinity households subscribe to community solar, making a powerful witness to the larger church and to our neighborhoods about the critical need to limit climate change. We hope you will join us!

Community Solar Garden Subscriptions are a 25 year agreement that will help your household save 9% on you monthly electricity bills while you use renewable solar energy. Often people ask what they should do with their subscription when they are planning a move. Please bring your questions to Dave or Sean, or see the frequently asked questions sheets at our table in the community room or at our open house to find out how your household can

  • Move your community solar garden subscription with you when you move to a new location in the Xcel service area or
  • Transfer your community solar garden subscription to
    • The new owners when you sell your house
    • A friend or relative or
    • A new subscriber on the waiting list of MN Community Solar

Our Windsource Campaign – We started by signing up members for wind power through Windsource Starting on the Sunday after Easter, April 12, through Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 20-15 through our Faithful Energy Campaign a volunteer team will help families in our congregation to sign up for the Windsource Program of Xcel Energy. Windsource is a voluntary program for residential and business customers to purchase (for a small monthly fee added to their electric bill) electricity generated by renewable sources such as wind power. Individuals can commit to purchasing different amounts of energy through Windsource, up to 100% of their total electricity bill. Our church building will be entirely subscribed to Windsource beginning in April! A 100% subscription for an average sized house increases the electric bill by about $4 a month. What – Our Goal – was to sign up 80% of Holy Trinity member households for Windsource by May 24, 2015.   Over 120 Holy Trinity Households for Windsource Why – As a community of faith – to use the gifts of creation responsibly.
